STORY MAKERS

ILLUSTRATING WITH EVA MONTANARI

FEBRUARY 20 - 22 , 2015

The course is addressed to people who want to tell stories through images.

Students can start from a classic story and/or try to realize a new one based on suggested proposals. In both cases, it will be explored the grammar useful for the creation of a visual narrative and, in particular, it will be explained what an illustrated book is, what are its codes and how its limits may become expressive possibilities.

Students will draw a lot and the'll learn how to organise personal ideas and sketches. Some time will be deserved for discussing and experimenting mixed techniques (acrylic, pastels, oil etc...) .
The teacher will talk about styles, models and inspirational material. Students will be asked to send information regarding their favorite artists (illustrators, painters, sculptors, etc.) ten days before the course strarts and to bring with them a selection of books and inspirational pictures.

 Furthermore, there will be a revision of students' portfolios, sketches and drawings.

PROGRAM

DAY 1

Course presentation
The interpretation of a text: (collective discussion and reading of a selection of texts from Italian folk tales by Italo Calvino)
The relationship between text and characters: movement and expression (live drawing and body language)

DAY 2

Character stylization based on previous researches
The study of the setting. Storyboarding, composition, rythm, solids and voids

DAY 3

Style, models, sources of inspiration
Technical experimantation on sketches realized by students

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION

Course language: Italian

Availability: 20 people

Required tools: Glue, scissors, eraser, kneaded eraser, pencil eraser, pencil sharpener, box cutter, big paper scotch, pencils of different hardness, a big pencil, big edged pencil or carbon, chalks of various colors, hair spray. Pastels, wax pastels, oil pastels. Oil colors, acrylic tempera. Who wants to experiment oil, it is available an odor-free plant thinner product by "Tintoretto".  Brushes of different sizes: very small (with edge) and very big (flat or paintbrush).  Very thin, cheap and transparent sketch paper (at least A3 format). It is also possible to bring other non conventional types of paper, such as colored ones, rice paper, recycled paper, paper clippings, waxed paper ( to be used as base when using acrylic on very light paper).

Required knowledge: Basic knowledge of drawing.

General requirements: "Italian Folktales" by Italo Calvino will be used as reference book during the course. Students should have a copy of the book and take it with them at the workshop.

Questo corso è indirizzato a chi desidera raccontare storie con le immagini.

Si potrà partire da un testo esistente e/o provare ad elaborarne uno sulla base delle suggestioni proposte.

In entrambi i casi verrà esplorata la grammatica utile alla creazione di un racconto visivo e nello specifico si parlerà di “albo illustrato”, dei suoi codici e dei suoi limiti che si trasformano in possibilità espressive.
Si disegnerà molto e si imparerà ad organizzare le proprie idee e disegni. Verrà destinato uno spazio per discutere e sperimentare delle tecniche miste (acrilico, pastelli, olio) come corollario al corso.
Si parlerà di stili, modelli e ispirazioni e a questo proposito verrà chiesto ai corsisti di inviare almeno 10 giorni prima dell’inizio del corso un’indicazione relativa al proprio artista/artisti preferito (pittura, scultura, etc..) e di portare con se relativi libri o una selezione d’immagini d’ispirazione.

Infine, verranno visionati velocemente il portfolio, schizzi o disegni precedentemente prodotti da ciascuno.

PROGRAMMA

GIORNO 1

Presentazione del corso
L’interpretazione del testo: (lettura e discussione collettiva partendo da una selezione di brani tratti dalle Fiabe Italiane di Calvino). Il rapporto testo-immagine.
Il personaggio: movimento ed espressività (disegno dal vero e mimica del corpo).

GIORNO 2

Stilizzazione del personaggio partendo dagli studi precedentemente prodotti.
Studio dell’ambientazione. Story-board, composizione, ritmo, pieni e vuoti.

GIORNO 3

Lo stile , i modelli, le fonti d’ispirazione.
Sperimentazione tecnica su uno degli schizzi prodotti.

INFORMAZIONI AGGIUNTIVE

Lingua del corso: Italiano

Posti disponibili: 20

Materiali necessari: Colla, forbici, gomma, gomma pane, gomma matita, temperino ,taglierino, scotch di carta e scotch grande da spedizione, matite di varia durezza, un matitone a punta grossa oppure fusaggine o carboncino, gessetti colorati+ lacca per capelli. Pastelli, pastelli a cera, pastelli a olio. Colori a olio, tempere acriliche. Per chi intende sperimentare l'olio esiste in commercio un diluente vegetale inodore e non nocivo. la marca è "Tintoretto". Pennelli di varie dimensioni: molto piccoli (con la punta) e molto grandi (piatti o pennellessa). Carte.Fondamentale Carta da schizzo molto leggera ,economica e trasparente (formato A3 minimo). E’ possibile portare anche altri tipi di carta meno convenziale come carte colorate, carte di riso, Carte di recupero, ritagli di carte, carta da forno (da utilizzare come base per l'utilizzo dell'acrilico su carte molto leggere).
